DOWNTIME 2: ACOUSTIC

Back by popular demand, Downtime is a series of mixtapes designed to personify moments of relaxation, meditaion, retrospection, introversion, and the like. Given the first Downtime had a more contemporary and electric vibe, I decided to piece together some acoustic sounds and rare live recordings to complement the first offering.

The Roots - Dear God

I like how The Roots are starting to sample more.  Yes, they have sampled in the past but every now and then you need a blatant sample like Dear Good and Doin It Again.  With the security of The Jimmy Fallon Show, I think they are going to make spontaneous/organic music.  These two records are perfect examples of my prediction.

"HISTORY" & "CASA BEY" (LIVE) MP3

Next to Dame Dash's DD172 Studios, The Jimmy Fallon Show is becoming the premier creative outlet for Hip-Hop at the moment. All of this can be be attributed to the house band, The Roots, who like their stage shows, always try something different to amaze and dumbfound the audience. These two downloads are live streams from two Mos Def performances. The Ecstatic was probably my favorite album of 09 and to see Mos finally getting television exposure for this project is great. To see The Roots handle "Casa Bey" with such ease was phenomenal to experience as a producer. Casa Bey is a chopped up sample that is schizophrenic in its arrangement. "History" with two live singers and the fact we get to here a Dilla sample loop track played by a live band was like chicken soup for the soul. Below you can download the whole Late Night with the Roots Mixtape.

Here is the new video for "History" to boot.
