Youth Speaks just sent me an anthology of poems and given their 15th Annual Teen Poetry is happening this Friday, I had to post. Youth Speaks is a pioneering youth poetry organization based in San Francisco but has chapters nationally as well as an international base of poets and fans. Youth Speaks’ 15th Annual Teen Poetry Slam takes place Friday, May 20, 2011 at the historic Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. As a way to show our appreciation, we are offering a free download letting fans experience the first poems to come out of Youth Speaks. Download and come hear the next generation of Youth Poetry Friday at Davies Symphony Hall. Personally, I am a Will.I.AM fan especially pre "Where is the Love" Will.I.AM, but even after Fergie-Gate he still made dope beats. My friend once saw him spin at his house and when someone bumped the table, he made a beat out of the skip. That has to account for something.

GIL SCOTT HERON - I'M NEW HERE (REVIEW)

You need to get this.  This is the most divergent projects of his career.  It seems as if Gil Scott Heron is at a point in his life where he is brutality honest with who he is and what he represents, meaning, the righteousness of pioneering poets such as himself as well as contemporary poets is a mask for the unspoken narcissism a lot of poets exhibit.  My dad often talked about Gil Scoot Heron when I was a kid and would say, "Yeah his music is cool but I doubt he believes what he is saying".  Poetry that expounds the day to day inner-workings of our conscience is just as, if not more revolutionary than a thousand antiwar poems.  When he was young he had intelligence but now he has the wisdom to be introspective as to what really brings about change; reconciling with our past and the transformation of self.  His poems are to the point yet complex and his production is great.  He has been the only poet I've heard that can successfully merge both poetry and music.  The quick 5-15 second interludes act as prefaces to the following songs.  The interludes are really outtakes of him in the studio discussing his experiences, behaviors, and proverbs.  Overall, this album is an amazing suprise for 2010.  Side note, he samples Kanye's Flashing Lights!  How tight is that?

After a 16 year hiatus, Gil Scott comes back with his unique voice and delivery, coupled with some Kanye-esq production. From the sound of this track, his upcoming album, I'm Here Now, might knock pretty hard. Based off the fun I just had in the Dominican Republic, I need to come out with a track called "Where Did the DR Go."
