The reason I called this post a special edition is because of how this remix came about.  I was on Twitter one night and two DJs/producers (DJ Doctor Who and DJ Daislo) I met on Twitter were going back and fourth about a beat.  DJ Doctor Who was contemplating whether or not to send a beat to Daislo and amidst their exchange, I asked to hear it as well.  They sent me the beat and I immediately recognized the sample.  I twitted Doctor Who back, gave him his props and told him I would flip the sample too.  I thought I would do it the following day but I got caught up in getting ready for a two week trip to the Dominican Republic.  I didn't think I would get around to it, but earlier tonight I sat down and made this beat in 20 minutes.  Then, I figured I should do something special with it, so I put Nas on top of it and here it is.  Below is a 3 week exchange chronicling the process.

What's so dope about Daislo and Doctor Who is their love for Hip-Hop period.  I have no idea how they ever heard my music but they have been amazing supporters.  They Twit each other back and forth sending each other beats in their infancy stages up until they create a final product, which I think is an amazing way to use Twitter (they should try Google Wave though).

Made these on Fruity Loops back in the day right after I remixed Jay-Z's Black Album. If you are wondering why one of the Nas songs and Jay-Z remixes both have Stevie Wonder samples, it is because I made about 5 songs for Chinaka Hodge using Stevie Wonder samples as a Kawanza gift 5 years ago. True story. These both were made in 2004. I guess I'm getting old for not remembering the correct years. Geeze. Side note, I used the breakdown of "Between the Sheets" before Just Blaze did it for "Ignorant Shit." Ha

JUST COPPED

I haven't been buying vinyl like I used to because rare LP's are so easy to download online so when I do go I get music I really want to listen to, not stuff to sample.  Check the rhyme and reason behind each pickup today (oh yeah Happy Halloween):

1.  Q-TIP - KAMAAL THE ABSTRACT  I used to work at a parking booth and this cat named Nino used to park there everyday.  Once we realized we had the same musical tastes, I gave him free parking everyday in exchange for data disks filled with music.  Hip-Hop, rock, house, and some of the best electronica I've ever heard was from this dude.  This is at a time Napster was just shut down and folks were still figuring out how they were going to send files, so needless to say I loved when he rolled up with something new.  He rolled up one day like 8 years ago and was hyped about this Q-Tip album.  He gave me a copy and I instantly liked it.  It's a trip it took so long to come out but I'm glad it has finally dropped and that they pressed up vinyl.  When I walked into Ameoba today, this album cover was staring at me and I can tell you confidently that it is now mine.  "Barely In Love" is the truth.  Many obnoxcious moments have been under the influence of that song.

2.  SLUM VILLAGE - FAN-TAS-TIC (VOL.1)  Classic.  I have Vol.2 on vinyl and always wanted this for "The Look of Love" and "Pregnant."  Never thought I'd have this on vinyl so like the Kamaal, it was staring at me.

3.  NAS - ILLMATIC  I know I have this somewhere but when you see a brand new Illmatic LP for $8.00 just get it.

4.  MICHAEL JACKSON - THRILLER (Special Vinyl)  I always wanted this vinyl.  I wish it was from the original pressing but I'll take the 25th Anniversary Edition.  It looks amazing.

5.  THE WIZ  I saw this when I got the Thriller album and since it was $3.00 so like the Nas advice, when you see anything Michael Jackson just get it.  The Wiz was mad annoying but a classic for Black Folk so it has a special place in my heart.

6.  CAMP LO - UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT  Yooooooooooooooo! For those who know me must know how amazing this is to me.  This is probably my favorite album.  It's definetly in the top five.  It has been so hard for me to find and I can't belive I finally have it.  A part of my life is now complete.

NICK JAMES - THE NAS REMIXES

Well folks, it is finally here. 16 remixes of one of Hip-Hop's best lyricists of all time, with two bonus remixes.

BACKGROUND:

This project was never intended to be what it has become. About five years ago, I started remixing songs as a way to practice that art of mixing and song structuring. Doing this has allowed my music to not sound flat. Aside from my hard beats with soft melodies; build-ups, transitions, and drops have also come to characterize the strengths of my music. So, years ago I would remix the best artists for practice. First it was Jay-Z, then Nas, then Kanye, Slum Village, E-40, Mobb Deep, Lupe Fiasco, Eminem, even Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Doing this allowed to me test the musical dexterity of my tracks. Thus, over the years I have complied numerous remixes. I've remixed almost 100 songs of major artists basically for fun.

In December 2007, I remixed American Gangster, appropriately titled, American Producer. I finished the project in 5 days. No one heard the full project until it was released. After it's release, two close friends of mine became even more excited with my skills as a producer. These two people were Chris Muller (Cplusjewelry) and Rolando Brown (Parrellel MVMT). Chris relentlessly promoted the project with good friend Brain Ingram and Rolando thought of future projects he could assist me with.

In January 2008, Rolando approached me to do an exclusive mixtape for his company. After months of trying to finish the project, we shelved it. Since I had a couplple new Nas remixes from the Parallel Project and Nas remixes from past years, I simply wanted to complie those and provide a free download for people who enjoy music.

What ended up happening was a couple of weekends in the Fall of 08 making remixes for the project. After I made "Purple," I remixed "Ether," then "N.Y. State of Mind," and then "Flyest Angels." I made these four in one weekend and it created a new enthusiam around a project I was on the fence about. I took a few more weeks to create brand new remixes. The rest is history. Enjoy.

I know he won't do it

When I saw this months ago I was juiced because I knew it was gonna be on his new album, but after hearing new tracks from Nas with these lyrics I know it won't be. I think Nas is the perfect rapper to rock this beat. Him or Jay-Z (even Lupe) would kill this sample. After Mary J. Blidge used the Roy Ayers, "Everybody likes the Sunshine" sample for her song "My Life," on the album of the same name, Hiphop heads have veered from it because she turned it into an R&B classic. Now is the time to bring it back so I can knock it when I speed down 580 or highway 13 on a hot summer day.

P.S. If I get impatient I will sample it and throw an old Nas song on it (probably from I Am because I just got the whole acapella album). And yes, you can download it here.Share
