On Friday I was feeling exhausted so I went to the record store. Needless to say, it cured me. Here is volume two of my vinyl buying chronicles. Note that I didn't say diggin because I rarely dig anymore. All of these purchases are brand new records. Records that are brand new or newly pressed old records that helped shape my childhood. Thus, it doesn't constitute diggin, you feel me?
1. SA-RA feat. JAY ELECTRONICA - LOVE CZARS REMIX (SERATO CONTROL VINYL)
I love Sa-Ra and Jay Electronica, so when this remix dropped I was an immediate fan. When I walked into the store this was the first thing that looked at me. It literally yelled at me (don't ask). Thus, this was the first item cradled under my armed on my vinyl quest on Friday. Peep the serato vinyl!
2. CARLOS NINO & MIGUEL ATWOOD FERGUSON - SUITE FOR MA DUKES
"Shake it Down." Dilla is my favorite producer. Him and Madlib help maintain my imagination. This album is a Mochilla project. If you don't know Mochilla please check it out! This album is an orchestra playing Dilla beats. This is must have for Hip-Hop fans that drink wine and have interesting photo books on their coffee tables. The paradox of this project is that Dilla of coursed sampled a lot, so here you have a live orchestra playing the composition of a sampled song that was once played by a live band. Example, "Stakes is High" is sampled from a song called "Swahililand" by Ahmad Jamal, so actually the orchestra is playing Jamal, right?
3. QUASIMOTO - THE UNSEEN INSTRUMENTALS
On to the next sample genius, Madlib. "The Unseen" is classic so getting the instrumentals is a must have. When I saw it I had to cradle it like the Sa-Ra. I always wanted this beat, "Bluffin!" This (again) an essential for Hip-hop fans that drink wine and have photo books and ya ya ya. Enjoy.
4. 2PAC - ME AGAINST THE WORLD
"Me Against the Worlds" is my favorite Pac album by far. I was obligated to get this. I realized I have no Pac vinyl and felt ashamed. The good thing is that it is a collector's edition pressing (whatever that means anyway).
5. SOULS OF MISCHIEF - 93 TIL INFINITY (SINGLE)
This was my favorite song growing up. I have the album on vinyl so this is the icing on the cake. I probably will never open it. Man this formed my idenity growing up. I still remeber buying it in L.A. when I was visiting my grandma. Sidenote, I also bought Ghostface's "Supreme Clientle" and Raekwon's "Only Built for Cuban Linx" (yes the PURPLE TAPE!) while visting my grandma. I guess she is good luck. Shout out to Grandma James.
6. THE PHARCYDE - SHE SAID (SINGLE)
The Pharcyde is like medicine for middle class Black folks. Any Black person who watched "A Different World" or got laughed at for dressing like Fatlip growing up, must love this music. Plus it has the Dilla remix on it! My favorite song next to "Runnin" off Labcabincalifornia.
